Singer Rihanna has credited her shorter hairdo with distinguishing her from other pop stars - and for allowing her to discover herself.
The 20-year-old rebelled against her record label's wishes last year (07) when she chopped her long locks into an edgy pixie cut to coincide with the release of her album Good Girl Gone Bad.
And the Umbrella hitmaker insists the change in style helped her establish her independence.
She says, "I felt like the whole world had long, curly, flowy blonde hair.
Ciara, Beyonce, Mariah, Christina Milian. Everybody wanted to be like everybody else. So I cut my hair and they (Def Jam) made me put my long hair back in (as extensions).
"The second time, I didn't have any discussions, nothing. I just cut it, I dyed it black, I went into the studio making music my way. I found myself all at once. I like things strong, edgy, a little to the left. I don't like things that are expected - nothing cliched".

Paris Hilton says boyfriend Benji Madden "always knows" how to make her smile.
The hotel heiress "couldn't be happier" with the Good Charlotte rocker, and was delighted when he decided to join her on the shoot for her new MTV reality TV show, which follows her search for a new best friend.
She said: "Benji and his friends came out to support me on the first two days of shooting. I love how he's always there for me, he always knows how to make me smile. Life is amazing, couldn't be happier, excited for what the future holds."
Paris is thrilled with the progress of the show, tentatively title 'Paris Hilton's My New BFF', and has already found some potential contenders for the coveted role of Best Friend Forever.
She added on her official blog: "I met all the contestants on Wednesday night (21.05.08). I was a little nervous at first because I always get shy meeting new people. But everyone ended up being very sweet, cool and fun to be around.
"I'm really happy with the final contestants, although it was really hard to pick only 18 people from so many great choices. They all looked stunning and beautiful and hot! So much fun!"
However, Paris admits she's terrified about making the first elimination decision, saying: "I am having anxiety and really dreading those moments of all the eliminations. But it's going to be a lot of fun and a these people will get to have a fun experience and I'm happy cause I feel like I've made friends with some of these people already."

Madonna wept with rage after an angry studio bust-up with producer Pharrell Williams.
The pair clashed while collaborating on Madonna's new album Hard Candy - and the Material Girl was shocked Williams was brave enough to stand up to her.
She reveals, "Pharrell made me cry. You know when you get angry with someone and you're spitting snot.
"I was in a sensitive mood in the studio and I didn't understand the rhythm he wanted me to sing in, and he was giving me a hard time.
"I was taken back by how he was talking to me".
Rather than walk away, the pair decided to clear the air, and patch things up - and they are now firm friends.
She adds, "We went upstairs and I said, 'You can't talk to me like that,' and burst into tears. And he said, 'Oh my God, Madonna has a heart.' "We had it out and now I love him and we make great music together".

Amy Winehouse 'to check into rehab in Israel'
Amy Winehouse has agreed to check into rehab in Israel, according the chairman of the county's Anti Drug Authority.
Eliezer Cohen says the singer, 24, will undergo £6,400 of treatment to help her kick her drug habit.
'Amy's people spoke to a reknowned Israeli institution and an Israeli professor who conducts a very special and effective method,' he told the Jewish Chronicle.
‘She has requested to come to him to do this method, since it's a method that is suitable for her.'
But Amy’s rep denies she's heading to rehab.
'She’s going back in the studio and has absolutely no plans to go abroad for treatment,’ he says.
Christina Aguilera Plans For Second Baby After Next Tour.
Singer Christina Aguilera is desperate for a second child - but is waiting for her career to slow down first.
The Dirrty star gave birth to son Max with her husband, music executive Jordan Bratman, earlier this year (12Jan08).
And though she admits she is already eager to expand her brood, Aguilera is putting plans for another baby on hold, so she can focus on her career.
She says, "Absolutely (I want another baby). I can't tell you when, as I'm not planning things like that. Maybe around the next tour".
Aguilera's 2007 Back to Basics tour was cut short last August (07) due to an unspecified illness. Her pregnancy was later announced by socialite Paris Hilton before Aguilera herself confirmed the story in an interview before the year's end.
Britney Spears Touches Down: Back from Bikini Slideshow Vacation With Mel
Britney Spears has been on what many thought was an odd vacation but she is back and the former pop wreck touched down at Bob Hope airport in the LA area after five days of playing around in her bikini and showing off while on an unlikely vacation with Mel Gibson. Look out Los Angeles, Spears is back in the states. The 26-year-old singer had been vacationing with dad Jamie and Mel and his wife.
Spears returned to the Bob Hope Airport in Burbank on Tuesday and was caught by photographers getting off of a private jet. Spears wowed some observers with her bikini pictures that seemed to emerge every afternoon as the paparazzi staked out the star's vacation on the island.
So why was Britney even with Mel and his wife Robin? It appears to be just another cog in the rehabilitation of Britney. Reports claim that Mel and Robin have Britney's best interest in mind and it probably isn't a bad idea as Mel is certainly a better travel companion than the paparazzo Britney used to travel with.
Britney spent lots of time on the holiday tanning and riding ATVs in Costa Rica. Many are also convinced that she has a bit of a thing going with her agent, Jason Trawick.
